New for 2012, the Graf G5500 goalie skates offer the performance and durability that you have come to expect from Graf with some improvements that make this a vast improvement over the G5 and G50 skate models of the past.

The boot of the G5500 features a tech mesh outer material and a 1.5mm Thermoplastic inner quarterpanel.  The tech mesh provides both light weight and durability, and the Thermoplastic allows for the boot to better conform to the shape of  the goalie's foot during the heat molding process.  This boot provides a medium level of stiffness.

The achilles area of the skate is cut downward to give the goalie incredible ankle flexibility, and this area has been reinforced with 2.2mm microfiber material to provide extra protection against wear. The interior of the boot is made of Graf's polyester cellular lining for comfort, light weight, and breathability with anatomical ankle padding for comfort. The boot features a full outsole to help reduce torque.

The cowling that comes standard with the G5500 skates has gone through an "addition by subtraction" process for 2012. Gone is the traditional "Grilamid" toe cap (an additional "bump out" strip at the end of the toe cap) and the additional material on the forward inside edge of the cowling previously used to support additional "Overdrive" blades. In addition to removing the Overdrive blade mount, the forward inside edge of the cowling has been cut back (narrowed) dramatically. The end result is a cowling that is 30% lighter, and it also allows the cowling to be tipped farther towards the inside edge before making contact with the ice. Goalies who like to keep lower to the ice but still want a cowling that allows for a greater attack angle will really love the G5500.

A replaceable skate blade also comes standard.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Skate Graf’s G5500 Supra goal skate is fantastic. This skate is designed with the goalie in mind, and is ideal for players with a strong ground game. As always, Graf has produced a quality crafted skate that holds up well in all levels of play. In addition to Graf’s quality craftsmanship, a few new tricks have been introduced to help goalies get the extra edge. Graf’s G5500 Supra goal skate has a lightweight and durable design. The boot of the skate is designed with Techmesh technology for a lightweight, yet strong boot that create’s less weight for the goalies foot and protects it from any contact. This technology allows the skate to form to the goalies foot after it is molded and broken in. The inside of the boot is lined with polyester lining to maintain lightness and allow for more breathability in the skate. As a whole, the boot will help to reduce torque on the goalies foot in gameplay with it’s Techmesh technology design. Another feature of this goal skate is the achilles slot for the goalie’s ankle. Here the ankle of the boot is cut down and lined with microfiber for a comfortable fit allowing the goalie increased ankle flexibility for pads saves. The most useful addition to the goal skate is it’s cowling. Graf has re-designed the skate to have 30% less material than the previous cowlings on any goal skate. This creates a lighter and more narrow cowling that not only makes the skate lighter, but allows for a greater attack angle for the blade to make contact with the ice. This will help goalies that play a butterfly style move more quickly and efficiently on the ice. The skate is lightweight, durable, and overall effective in it’s ability to improve any goalie’s game. One minor flaw with the skate is the stiffness of the boot. The Techmesh technology can become stiff after it is hardened and molded. This, along with the narrow cowling and boot, can create pressure points on the goalies foot. To avoid any problems with the comfortability of the skate, make sure the boot is molded properly to help make a nice fit to the goaltender’s foot. If proper molding isn’t enough to avoid discomfort, a thick pair of socks can be used as a cushion to reduce pressure. As always, any time a goalie purchases new skates there is always discomfort. As time passes, the skate will adjust to the goalies foot for a comfortable fit. As it was mentioned before, this is a great skate for goaltenders that like to play a butterfly style. The smaller and more narrow cowling creates a greater attack angle for the blade to make contact with the ice. This means that when a goalie is in the butterfly position, the distance to incline their leg upward and make contact with the ice is reduced. From personal experience, the skate helps speed up lateral movement and allows the pad to stay closer to the ice to help make those big saves. This skate is great for any goalie looking to improve their game, at any level. To any butterfly goalie that plays a strong ground game, I’d highly recommend this skate to help take your play to the next level. Best of luck to all of you in the upcoming season.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from G5500 Great Buy The G5500 is a very good skate. Good fit in the heel; no slop. My street shoe size is 8, the Graf size 7R fits perfectly, not the 6.5 shown on the sizing chart. Quality and workmanship appear excellent. Easy break-in, very comfortable now. New cowling design is light weight and allows a good attack angle as advertised. This would be a good buy at the original price, but is a great value at the sale price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from G5500 Impressions This skate model offers a more narrow and comfortable fit as well as a stiffer boot compared to a last years Bauer one60. Weight distribution is noticeably different as well, with this model being much more heel centric in nature. The stiffer boot may allow the user to go with a more shallow hollow. A half inch in Bauer one60's translated to skate chatter when stopping in these. If poor heel fit or lack of comfort with a Bauer goal skate plagues you like it did me these may be worth trying.

i wear a bauer reactor 4000 goalie skate and is the narrow fit the same as a D fit in bauer skates? Also, are these skates similar to reebok goalie skates?
Asked by: Heipfam
The narrow fit is the same as the Bauer "D" fit. The Graf fit more similar to Reebok than Bauer.

Outter material toughness

Hi there, I just purchased these skate a week ago. After my first skate, there is a good scratch on the left inner boot (see image). Not a simple scratch, I can run my fingernail through a part of it. When I put pressure on it with my fingers, I can sense that it is not as stiff as when I do it on the other boot on the same spot. (doesnt bend, but i feel its a little weaker) Now I dont want the boot to eventually crack on me. Should I be worried about this, or is the material of the skate very robust and will last me for a good 4-5+ years? Thanks, Mat.

Hey Mat - this picture is pretty grainy on my end. If you don't mind, please email it to me again at and I'll take a better look at it. Thanks, Mike
