Vaughn takes its goalie pad design intuition and applies it to the butterfly-style pad with the LT98 Ventus goal pad. The LT98 features a flat face design to allow for excellent rebound predictability off the pad. The outer roll contains only a single break to allow for some flexibility from the Ventus, which is designed to be a much stiffer pad than its Velocity cousin. The top of the pad has been extended slightly and the boot scoop has been shortened to provide great control and coverage.

The interior of the LT98 features pro core construction, consisting of layers of multiple density foams to offer longevity and protection. The core also utilizes one solid piece of carbon fiber running the length and width of the pad face, supplying tremendous durability and rigidity when pucks hit the pad edges.

Vaughn has introduced a new breed of knee cradle with the LT98. Instead of a tradition knee cradle and lock, Vaughn has left the knee area exceptionally wide on the Ventus. This is to accomodate the large, integrated knee/thigh guard that is included with the pad. This newly designed knee/thigh guard serves as both the knee cradle and the thigh protection, combining the two parts into an integrated mobility and protection system.

Vaughn included a new strapping system on the LT98. The top three straps and buckles can be moved up or down the pad to customize the fit to the goalie's preference. Any unwanted straps and buckles can also be removed should that be desired.

  • One-piece carbon fiber reinforcement for rigidity of the pad
  • Integrated knee/thigh guard knee cradle system
  • Wide knee area to accomodate the integrated knee guard system
  • Flat-face design with a single break on the outer roll for a balance of stiffness and flexibility
  • Offset toe ties

Pad Style:Butterfly/BlockingThe style of play ("Reaction/ Hybrid" or "Blocking/Butterly") that the pad was designed for. "Reaction/Hybrid" pads tend to be more flexible and have more breaks - great for those with a narrow butterfly. "Blocking/Butterfly" pads tend to have fewer breaks and are more rigid - better for goalies with a wider butterfly.
Knee Breaks:1 (Below Knee)Breaks in the foam & material of the outer roll. Pads with zero (O) knee breaks tend to be more rigid and have less flex, while pads with one (1) or two (2) knee breaks are "softer" and have more flex built into them.

The Key factor is the overall length. The length can be divided into three sections:

A.The boot

B.Instep to knee

C.Knee to top or thigh rise

The proper length of the goal pad boot is determined by the goalie's skate size. The next key area is the instep to knee that determines the shin length. Finally, the knee to top or thigh rise is a personal measurement depending on how much pant and pad overlap the goaltender prefers. A general rule is 7" to 8".

A.Skates size: provide the skate size for proper boot fit.

B.Instep to knee: measure from instep to the front center of kneecap while leg is in slightly bent position.

C. Thigh rise: measure from front center of kneecap up the thigh to desire height.

A + B + C = Estimated size of pad

If fitted properly, the goalie's knee should rest directly behind the center knee roll with the pad securely attached to the goal skate and properly strapped on the goaltender's leg. Generally, this will ensure that the pad breaks (bends) at the knee/shin and ankle as designed for optimal performance.
