Unlike past Velocity leg pads that saw only small changes from version to version, the new Velocity 7 XF leg pads for 2016 are a brand new design. Though Velocity aficianados will find enough familiarity to keep them coming back to this tried and true pad, several new elements have been introduced to make the V7 the best model ever!
The biggest enhancement, undoubtedly, in this year's V7 is the removal of shredded foams at the shin and boot. Instead, the XF uses full sheet foams from toe to thigh rise for a more rigid, consistent shape (think: minimal shrinking). The foam sheets have perforated holes throughout to help it flex more easily, to also save 15% in overall pad weight. Though this pad is more rigid than past Velocity pads, the XF still has a good amount of vertical and torsional flex to keep it true to past designs.
The leg channel has been made wider in the XF to aid in pad rotation, and the knee cradle is also wider to accomodate goalie's desires for more open space here. A larger, more segmented calf wrap covers the goalie's leg for added protection. At the boot, the heel strap has been moved higher up the pad to aid in pad rotation, and to also better accomodate goalies that use a "Lundqvist loop" setup with their goal skates.
The stock pad comes with a traditional double-break, though the traditional rounded knee rolls have been removed in favor of a more modern square knee roll design for better rebound control. The pad still keeps an "over-squared" design on the inside edge / upper thigh rise to keep the pad sealed tight to the ice. Additionally, harder foams are now used on the entire inside edge to make sliding easier than ever.

The Key factor is the overall length. The length can be divided into three sections:

The proper length of the goal pad boot is determined by the goalie's skate size. The next key area is the instep to knee that determines the shin length. Finally, the knee to top or thigh rise is a personal measurement depending on how much pant and pad overlap the goaltender prefers. A general rule is 7" to 8".
A.Skates size: provide the skate size for proper boot fit.
B.Instep to knee: measure from instep to the front center of kneecap while leg is in slightly bent position.
C. Thigh rise: measure from front center of kneecap up the thigh to desire height.
A + B + C = Estimated size of pad
If fitted properly, the goalie's knee should rest directly behind the center knee roll with the pad securely attached to the goal skate and properly strapped on the goaltender's leg. Generally, this will ensure that the pad breaks (bends) at the knee/shin and ankle as designed for optimal performance.
