2014 Vaughn Buyers Guide - LEG PADS

In this article, we'll cover the major construction, fit and performance characteristics of Vaughn's three PRO level leg pads: the 2000 V6 (which replaces the 7800 V5), the 2200 V6 (which replaces the 7990 V5), and the LT90 Ventus. We won't cover EVERY feature of these pads (that's too much to read anyway), so we've included each pad's product video at the bottom of this post. Together, this should teach you everything you need to know about these fantastic leg pads.

When reading this review, please keep in mind that several of the design and performance characteristics of Vaughn's PRO level pads can also be found in the mid-level lines,which are listed in the "Who the Pads are Designed For" section below. Though there will be differences in construction options and materials, both the Senior and Intermediate lines should perform similarly.

Who the pads were designed for

  • V6 2000: The 2000 leg pad is designed for the Reaction/Hybrid style goaltender who is very active in the net. This goalie wants the pads to flex easily at each break, and also wants a good deal of torsional (twisting) flex as well. In short, the pad should be able to stay on the goalie's leg no matter what direction it moves or twists in. This goalie also prefers rebounds that hit the pad and die within a few feet of the goaltender. Other V6 models in this same style include the 1000, the 1000i, and the 700 (youth).
  • V6 2200: The 2200 is a hybrid design, built for the goalie that plays an athletic style (80%) but at times will adopt a "drop and block" style (20%) under certain game circumstances. The goalie who chooses the 2200 will want a pad that flexes well at every break, but he/she does not want as much upper knee or torsional flex that the 2000 goalie will like. This goalie may have a slightly wider butterfly, and will also prefer more active rebounds that shoot away from the net upon impact. Other V6 models in this same style include the 1100, the 1100i, and the 800 (youth).
  • LT90 Ventus: The LT90 Ventus is targeted at the drop and block style goalie who wants a very tall, flat, & stiff pad. The goalie who chooses the LT90 wants very active rebounds off of the pad face, and also prefers a more flat profile and boot scoop to keep rebound trajectory as predictable as possible. If there was a complete opposite of the 2000 pad, the LT90 is it. Other Ventus models in this same style include the LT80, the LT60, and the new LT50 (youth).

Construction

New for 2014, Vaughn introduces their "Pro Core" inner foam technology to the Velocity 6 Series. This system combines traditional sheet foams with a sheet of carbon fiber over the top to decrease pad weight and provide incredible pad flex, all while increasing pad rigidity and minimizing pad shrinkage over time. Unlike sheet foam, this carbon fiber "recoil plate" is very flexible, but is also very "spring-like" in nature. Once pressure is taken off of the plate, it snaps right back to it's original shape - and it does this consistently over time.

Aesthetically, you'll notice that both Velocity 6 pads share the same graphic, which splits the pad face in two zones for more graphic options. The V6 graphic is also very similar to the LT90 Ventus graphic, which allows the goaltender to mix and match pads and gloves and still keep a similar graphic setup.

  • V6 2000: Full sheet foam core from the top of the thigh rise down through the leg channel; stuffed foam in the leg channel and side gussets. The core takes up a much larger portion of the pad than in years past, and the carbon fiber recoil plate sits atop the sheet foam from the top of the thigh rise to the lower knee break. New for 2014, the Pro Pac shredded foam stuffing has been made more firm to further help maintain the pad's shape over time. A 4mm sheet of soft foam runs the full length & width of the pad and sits just underneath the pad face.

  • V6 2200: Full ultra high-density foam core from the top of the thigh rise to the boot with a sheet of carbon fiber that runs the full length and width of the pad. A 4mm sheet of soft foam sits atop the carbon fiber to give it some protection and to soften up the pad face a bit. The V6 2200 has no shredded foam.

  • LT90 Ventus: The internal core is constructed of 9 individual pieces of varying densities of foam that are bonded together to form the overall shape of the pad. Sheets of HD foam sit close to the pad face, and softer sheet foams sit closer to the leg for a softer feel in the leg channel. This design allows the core to twist and move somewhat, but mostly it gives the pad a stiff, taller pad profile. The LT90 Ventus has no shredded foam.

Pad Flex

  • V6 2000 Flex Level - Extreme: The 2000 has super soft flex points above the knee, below the knee, and at the boot. The pad also has a great deal of torsional (twisting) flex at the lower leg/boot as well.
  • V6 2200 Flex Level - Softer: The 2200 has a soft flex at the boot break, a soft flex at the lower knee break, and a "medium" flex at the upper knee break. There is a slight bit of torsional flex at the lower leg/boot, but this flex is harder to achieve than it is in the 2000.
  • LT90 Ventus Flex Level - Very Stiff : The LT90 Ventus (stock version with solid outer roll) is very stiff at the upper knee, lower knee and boot breaks, and there is little to no torsional flex in the pad at all.

Fit

  • V6 2000: The 2000 has a traditional fit - follow your basic "ankle to knee" guidelines and you'll get a good idea of what size you'll need. Because of the shredded foam at the boot, the 2000 tends to settle and "shrink" somewhat after extended use. Knowing this, some goalies tend to go with a pad that is 1" taller than what they would normally get to compensate for the shift in size.
  • V6 2200: The scoop area over the skate of the 2200 has slightly less bend than the 2000, as well as a more shallow boot channel, and this raises the pad slightly higher on the goalies skate. Goalies should take these features into account, though we still feel that a goalie who's knee fits a 33+2 V6 2000 leg pad will fit in a similarly sized V6 2200. Due to sheet foam / carbon fiber core and the lack of shredded foams, goalies can expect this pad to maintain it's height and shape over time.
  • LT90 Ventus: Due to a much steeper boot scoop and a taller overall pad profile, the LT90 Ventus typically fits one full inch taller than the V6 2000 leg pad. For example, a goalie in a 33+2 2000 leg pad will find that a 32+2 LT90 will fit him/her perfectly. And because the sheet foams are incredibly stiff in the LT90, goalies can expect this pad to maintain it's overall shape and height over time.
